Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan has issued a grovelling apology to Wallabies fans after the team’s worst Rugby World Cup campaign.

The Wallabies slumped to its first group stage exit from the tournament after a record loss to Wales and Australia’s first defeat to Fiji in 69 years.

“All I would say to the rugby fans and the stakeholders, I again apologise for what happened at the World Cup but hopefully you see someone with a steely resolve who wants to bat on,” McLennan told Stan Sport. “I felt so bad after we lost to Wales and there were fans in the street who’d spent their money going over to watch the games and the tournament, and all their hopes had been ripped up. So I feel really bad about that but I also want to stick it out and fix it once and for all. I think I am doing it for the right reasons.”

RA will undergo a thorough review of the Wallabies' dismal World Cup campaign and investigate why the program went significantly over budget. The World Cup post-mortem will be conducted by a three-member panel of former Wallabies Justin Harrison and Andrew Slack – also the Rugby Union Players Association CEO – along with sports industry executive Darlene Harrison.RA’s spending has been porous in the past with the organisation nearing bankruptcy and recording a $27.1 million loss in 2020.
