Sydney residents are advised to monitor for measles symptoms after a confirmed case arrived from Hawaii and traveled through the city. NSW Health issued an alert for anyone who was on specific flights or at Sydney International Airport and Domestic Airport T3 on January 17. A separate alert was issued for Western Sydney after a case returned from Vietnam and visited Family Doctors Berala on January 18. Officials urge people to ensure their measles vaccinations are up to date.

Sydney residents are being advised to monitor for measles symptoms after a confirmed case arrived from overseas and passed through the city while infectious. NSW Health issued a new measles alert on Friday, a day after the Gold Coast Public Health Unit issued a similar warning for the same person. The individual, who arrived on the Gold Coast via Qantas flight QF596 on January 17, had just landed in Australia from Hawaii that afternoon.

NSW Health Director of Communicable Diseases Dr Christine Selvey said that while these locations pose no ongoing risks, people who were on the flights or moving between terminals during these times should be aware of potential symptoms. “It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear after an exposure, so it’s important for people who visited these locations to look out for symptoms up until Tuesday 4 February,” Selvey said.
