“We saw it was for sale and we thought, they’ve done a great job building a good brand and a great database so maybe we can start selling our meat to their customers,” Mr McGiveron said.Founded in 2019, Our Cow emerged after a tough few years of droughts, bushfires and rock-bottom beef prices threatened the survival of Ms Tarrant and Mr McGiveron’s cattle farm, located outside Casino in northern NSW.

“So we started a Facebook page advertising our meat because we knew people wanted to support Australian farmers and we knew they wanted to know where their food was actually coming from.” In April 2021, Our Cow stabilised its monthly recurring revenue and set up its meat subscription service, giving buyers a way to have their meat regularly delivered to their doors.“Our first customers were friends and family that felt sorry for us, but soon there was this wave of people signing up,” Ms Tarrant said, adding that producers of grass-fed lamb and sheep, free-range pork and organic chicken were soon clamouring to get involved.

They also say the Facebook group has exploded into a nationwide community where customers have been known to appear unannounced at farms just to congratulate and thank the farmers.
