Anglers based in the Test Valley say sewage pollution is destroying their 'ecology and economy'
Environmental campaigners are sounding the alarm over the state of the River Test, known asAnglers have accused Southern Water of damaging the region’s “ecology and economy” by “underinvesting” in its sewage infrastructure.
There are 15 storm overflows on the River Test and its tributaries. Latest annual statistics show raw sewage was discharged from these pipes a total of 121 times in 2022. Instead Southern Water has been transporting excess wastewater to a treatment plant in the village of Fullerton, from which some sewage has been spilling untreated into the river.
Howard Taylor, a river keeper who also runs a local fly fishing business, said the sewage system in the Test Valley was “broken” and is “damaging our ecology and our economy”. Today, local river keepers, the Test and Itchen Association and the Angling Trust are staging a demo in protest of the ongoing pollution of the river from Fullerton Wastewater Treatment Works.
