People have been giving fisherman Craig Garland lots of advice as he prepares to become a member of the Tasmanian parliament. Among the wisdom is: 'Don't wear a suit, don't dress up … you're not one of them'.

Craig " Garbo " Garland, a fisherman from Tasmania 's north-west, has been successful on his sixth try to become a politician.

Six attempts to enter politics later, Mr Garland will now be making waves inside Tasmanian parliament."A lot of the people that have come up to me just in recent times … 'Don't wear a suit, don't dress up. You're not one of them.' With income from his fishing operations dwindling, Mr Garland has struggled to stay financially afloat over the years.

"I'm there for the same reason Jeremy is, so if we can put past differences aside and say, 'How can I constructively be involved in making things a bit easier and a bit better?', that's my intent.Craig Garland says Tasmanians "don't want to be taken back into the dark ages with the pollution and corporations overriding communities".

"Things have changed. And we want that change to continue. We don't want to be taken back into the dark ages with the pollution and corporations overriding communities," he said."As an independent, I can probably safely assume there's been a lot of people like me that have not been listened to, not been attended to, and I guess they'll be coming to me to take on whatever issues they have," he said.
