'We forget to commit to what we really want, but breaking has taught me to commit to myself and my dreams.”
: DJing, rapping, graffiti, and of course, breaking. Hip Hop culture has grown so much that it’s become a universal art form.
However, breaking came with its own set of challenges for Granda. When she began taking lessons in Ecuador, there weren’t many other B-Girls. “Most of the girls would practice inconsistently before eventually quitting, so the B-Boys thought I’d do the same,” Granda said. “They would criticize my moves and didn’t understand why I was competing. It took a long time for me to gain their respect.” The B-boys labeled the girls as distractions and believed Granda was only there to find a boyfriend.
“It’s beautiful to connect with people from all over the world that have the same dreams as you and have had to work hard too. Connecting with that energy and feeling like I’m part of the scene that I wanted to be a part of when I was younger is just wonderful,” she said.
