If you’re new to Elle Mills’s YouTube channel, you might know her for her mental health advocacy or her openness about being bisexual. For her channel, Elle has filmed her coming out , her first kiss, and even her own mental breakdown.
“I was experiencing a sudden growth in my career at a very fast pace. It was all so overwhelming, and the things I experienced are things I would never wish upon anybody else, which is why I became interested in mental health advocacy,” Elle tells. “I don’t really have any answers, but I do have my story to tell, and I know that just knowing that you aren’t alone and that there are others experiencing what you may be feeling does go a long way.
After she posted her video “Burnt Out at 19,” about the mental health impact of her YouTube channel, Elle took a break from the spotlight, not in order to hide but as a way to take care of herself. Looking into the future, Elle says she hopes the world won’t have to strive for openness and inclusivity — because those things will exist naturally. And by sharing her own story, she’s already making the change she hopes for.
“As someone who is of mixed race and Asian heritage, female, and part of the LGBTQ+ community,” Elle says, “I hope that I can be a representative for people just like me in the media and that there are more people like me standing right beside me.”
