Fairfax County voters will select a new school board this November, with all 12 seats up for election.
The Washington Post sent questionnaires to each candidate about the most pressing issues in Fairfax County and their top priorities. Candidates discussed many of the same issues: recovering pandemic-era learning loss, finding ways to retain quality teachers and keeping politics off the board.While school board races in Virginia, like most of the country, are nonpartisan, nearly all the candidates on the ballot this fall have been endorsed by local political parties.
Other priorities include understanding better why teachers and students leave FCPS, focusing on special education, and increasing the number of schools that participate in the Purple Star program for military-connected students.Gabor, a math and computer science teacher in Fairfax, said he is running for the board because he would bring the perspective of an educator who’s in tune with the concerns on the ground.
In addition to mental health, McElveen said he would prioritize retaining high-quality educators, maintaining safe facilities, implementing universal high-quality pre-K programs and supporting an inclusive curriculum by “preventing the banning of books, and upholding the rights of LGBTQIA+ students.”Moon previously served on the school board from 1995 to 1999 and then again from 2004 to 2019.
Jackson said he would focus on recovering pandemic learning loss by expanding existing public-private collaborations. Other priorities include revising policies that limit Asian students from participating in advanced programs, eliminating educational redlining, enhancing middle school sports and removing “content that depicts child pornography.
If elected, Dunne said he would support expanding experiential learning, workforce development and dual-enrollment programs. Other priorities include fighting attempts to censor school libraries and expanding mental health support to include drug abuse prevention and treatment.Zimmerman, a former educator, said she is running to focus on providing world-class education, rather than politics, to all students. Zimmerman’s top focus would be literacy.
