Buffalo Bayou Partnership continues the free Jazzy Sundays in the Parks series, celebrating the legacy and evolution of jazz in Houston, at the Water Works in Buffalo Bayou Park.Cyclers, walkers and joggers alike share space on the Buffalo Bayou Park trails near Eleanor Tinsley Park, embracing the shade of magnolias, the fringed foliage of pink crape myrtles and the sunny yellow petals on leggy stands of black-eyed Susans.
The steady stream of work is accomplished through public-private partnerships and plenty of grassroots volunteer hours, but praise for successful fundraising and execution of plans often leads back to Nancy and Rich Kinder and their philanthropic Kinder Foundation. Rich, with a net worth of $7.1 billion is listed 128th on the 2021 Forbes 400 list. He came to Houston in 1982 and eventually went to work for his college friend, Ken Lay, who founded Enron. In 1996, he and Bill Morgan founded Kinder Morgan, now the largest pipeline company in the U.S., owning or operating 84,000 miles of pipeline.
They’ve donated some $453 million to nonprofits, and of that, more than $181 million has gone to parks in big-wow projects that draw in other philanthropists. The Kinders’ involvement at Memorial Park drew in Cyvia Wolff, whose family established the Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Family Foundation. The two navigated the ups and downs of launching Discovery Green, and in 2008 when it was finally finished, when others might have said “I’m done,” Nancy said: “I want more.”
