Two years on from the tragic death of Sarah Everard, Kate Lloyd meets the advocates creating a radical new blueprint for a safer world for women.
Afdal hears similar problems faced by refugees. “These are women who don’t have a community because they’ve left them all behind,” she says. “It’s such a lonely situation to be in.” Trans women, similarly, are four times more likely to experience sexual violence than cis people. Grace* works for an organisation that trains event spaces to stop sexual harassment before it escalates.
The work Grace does – training people to be better bystanders – is essential for a safer future, believes Simon from Evaw. “It’s part of that prioritisation of prevention,” she says.
At the boys school in London, Hurst has rounded off his workshop, and is explaining that running these sessions has changed his life. His relationships with his family and his girlfriend have improved. “Even my mental health.” It’s how he knows the sessions work for the boys too. Asked what he thinks a blueprint for a safer world for women should be, he races through a handful of ideas before landing on one. “Men feeling equipped to challenge other men,” he says.
That commitment to struggle towards a more equal world – one that might take sacrifice for years to come – is something that links all these activists. Especially the women. They’ve seen the work it’s taken to get this far, they’re aware of the risks of trying to overturn an unfair system. They know that change might never come. But they keep going. “We have to start from the premise,” says Simon, “that violence against women is not an inevitable part of life. Ending it is achievable.
