Born in Senegal and raised in Kuwait, musician Fatima Al Qadari recently composed the music for the Cannes Film Festival prize-winning feature 'Atlantics.'
Atlantics, which arrived in theaters on November 15 and comes to Netflix today, made history at Cannes for being the first title from a black female director ever to be selected for competition in that festival's 72-year history. And not only was it selected, but it won.Directed by French-Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop,a group of unpaid Senegalese construction workers who disappear at sea one night in search of a better life abroad and the women they have left behind in Dakar.
The young artist was fortunate not to face any serious obstacles in her household. Her mother was “extremely supportive” of her pursuit of music. “Without her support, I can't say how it would've turned out,” Qadiri says. “My life purpose is to release the records I have in my head, and I'm doing it.”Atlantics
. “She approached me years before the film was shot,” Qadiri explains. “She knew from the get-go that I was her composer. I got to make my first score with a director who respects my music and I got be part of a Senegalese film, the country where I was born. The whole cast and crew are family now. It's been a formative experience.”
To people looking to align their career with their life purpose, Qadiri offers this simple yet pointed advice: “Go with what you excel at and work hard at it.”
