The Indigenous Victorians who will deliver a treaty between the state government and First Nations people have been chosen after a record number of voters turned out to elect the 22-representative body
, which includes a long-time activist who has been a critic of the organisation.
Those appointed include an ally of Victorian federal senator Lidia Thorpe, Gary Murray, who ran unsuccessfully for the assembly in 2019. Thorpe and her allies were not supportive of the assembly when it was first announced because they argued it. The figure cited was heavily contested by local Aboriginal groups.
“The assembly needs to really drive that – we’re there for those 38 nations, those 50,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders,” he said. “We’re going to need strong leadership.
