Federal Liberals were penalised in affluent coastal areas for inaction on climate change and energy. But Kylie von Muenster believes NSW has set itself apart.
World Wildlife Fund’s renewable energy scorecard in 2023 is another coup she’s proud to tout.
She is also sanguine on the prospects of a challenge from a so-called teal independent backed by Climate 200. An independent is yet to come forward and the environmental advocacy group founded by Simon Holmes a Court, which offers funding to independents campaigning on issues such as climate, environment and integrity, is yet to announce its plans for the seat.
Having spent the past three years studying planning at the University of NSW, she says she cannot help but spot opportunities where the state government can either work with the local council or independently to boost commercial zones such as Bondi Junction, and high streets and shopping strips such as a Coogee and Randwick. There’s also opportunities for better public transport and a potential extension of the Kingsford light rail further south.
She points to the Kingsford light rail which terminates on a segment of Coogee’s Anzac Parade, where a former tram track stretching to the waters of Botany Bay at La Perouse has been converted into a grassy median strip, and could easily be converted back to a light rail track.
