that he joined the RNLI after a long career in the maritime sector. He’s even worked as a boating officer in Antarctica. “We had a month of complete darkness,” he says. What made him help the RNLI? “I grew up living next door to the RNLI station in West Kirby and as a child would watch the rescuers go out. And I thought, I’d like to do that.”
It was full on during Covid, Mr Owen adds. “We had five or six call outs a day, when everyone was getting out to the beaches.” He was a strong swimmer, but he was swimming against the tide. “It just shows the danger of the sea,” says Howie. “You’ve got his parents there, waiting for news, and you think, ‘Oh God!’. It wasn’t the outcome we wanted but at least we brought him home to rest. His sisters are now ambassadors for the RNLI which is great.”
The major rescue was launched in July 2020 after Christine Robinson and her son Niall got into difficulty after they went into the water after their beloved pet Geordie was swept into the River Mersey from a slipway. Sadly, Christine was pronounced dead at the scene. He says: “Your training kicks in and you’re able to keep calm. It wasn’t the outcome we wanted, but at least two lives were saved that day.
