Meghan Markle's father defends releasing private letter she sent him — because he found it 'deeply hurtful'

Thomas Markle is speaking out after the duchess and Prince Harry took legal action against the newspaper which published her private letter.

Meghan Markle’s father is defending his decision to leak a personal letter she sent him last year, telling the Mail on Sunday that he’d intended to keep its contents private, but had been moved to publish it after he felt he was being besmirched.

“I decided to release parts of the letter because of the article from Meghan’s friends in People magazine,” he told the newspaper. “I have to defend myself. I only released parts of the letter because other parts were so painful. The letter didn’t seem loving to me. I found it hurtful. The People article he is referring to included anonymous interviews from five of Meghan’s friends, who said numerous things in defense of the duchess and her highly scrutinized life, including how painful it was for her to send a father a long letter expressing her hurt and for him to write back “requesting a photo op.”
