The art event is moving away from being held once every two years as Melbourne seeks to firm its grip on the nation’s arts capital crown.

Experts say Melbourne’s status as the nation’s arts capital – damaged by lockdowns and challenged by spending at the lucrative Sydney Contemporary – is still intact, as the Melbourne Art Fair reveals plans to run every year to capitalise on local demand.

Melbourne Art Foundation chief executive and fair director Maree Di Pasquale is increasing the frequency of the fair to an annual event in a move she said was testament to Melburnians’ appetite for contemporary art. “We have the history [and] we have the NGV, which is probably the strongest public institution in Australia,” she said. “The arts is just part of the culture of Melbourne.”Gannon said the COVID lockdowns were difficult for artists and galleries in Melbourne, but the city had rebounded.

“It is not an art fair that is trying to be the biggest ... it is trying to be about quality,” she said. Grishin said Melbourne would soon surpass Sydney as Australia’s biggest city and more money was spent on art in Melbourne than anywhere else in the country. “The art fair makes a strong contribution to the contemporary art ecosystem, as making more opportunity for artists to sell their work is fundamentally a good thing,” he said.
