Melbourne Braces for 100mm of Rain as Flood Watch Issued
Melbourne, Heavy Rain, Flood Watch

Melbourne is forecast to receive up to 100mm of rain from Thursday through Saturday, with heavy showers, humid conditions and possible flooding. Parts of Victoria are under a flood watch, prompting warnings for campers, hikers and motorists to monitor forecasts and avoid floodwaters.

) said the hard and fast dumping of rain expected throughout this weather event is “more on the unusual side”. Showers are already setting in but a major cloudburst is set to saturate the city from about 1pm on Thursday.

A maximum rainfall of 40mm is forecast to fall throughout the day, with another 35mm expected on Friday. Another 25mm is expected for Saturday, bringing forecast rainfall totals to 100mm. BOM senior meteorologist Jonathan How told 7NEWS.com.au the monthly October rainfall average is about 66mm. A heavy downpour is first expected in the western suburbs around Geelong and Avalon, and How said: “We will gradually see that rainband push into the city into the afternoon and evening.

Melbournians will endure sopping wet commutes to end the working week. How said the humidity preceding the heavy rainfall is linked to the tropical origins of the rainband.

“The rainband coming down does have a bit of a tropical link, so it is pushing the tropical moisture under Victoria,” he said. How said the weather system stretches across Central Australia and also up into the northern part of Western Australia. Camping warning for kids on school holidays Families going camping or hiking for the final week of the Term 3 school holidays in Victoria have been warned to keep across weather warnings in case areas become dangerous.

“We are certainly reminding people to check the radar and check the forecast and warnings, particularly heading into the afternoon,” How said. Parts of Gippsland, and North East and Central Victoria have already been included in a flood watch warning. People are warned to stay away from flooded waterways, and to avoid driving or playing in floodwater. Meteorologists have warned people across the state to keep an eye on severe weather and flood warnings.

BOM said the following catchments areas are likely to be affected by the looming rainfall: Mitchell River, Avon River, Macalister River, Thomson River, Latrobe River, Traralgon Creek, Bunyip River and Dandenong Creek, Yarra River upstream of Warrandyte, Upper Murray and Mitta Mitta Rivers, Kiewa River, Ovens and King Rivers, Seven and Castle Creeks, Goulburn River upstream of Lake Eildon, Goulburn River Eildon to Seymour, Goulburn River downstream of Seymour, Loddon River, and the Avoca River.

“The location, intensity, and timing of this forecast rainfall is highly uncertain, and the rainfall focus may shift to other areas within the state as this event progresses. ”The weather system set to saturate the state over the next few days will move away on Sunday.

“There will still be a few showers and it will be a little bit cooler, about 17C in the city,” How said. But if sunshine emerges on Monday, it will not last for long. The tropical temperatures carried down with the rainband on Thursday and Friday will be replaced with a crisper weather system carrying a cold front across Victoria on Tuesday.

He said that while the imminent downpour is somewhat unusual, the “roller coaster” forecasts are “classic spring weather for Melbourne. ”
