Businessman Peter Lawrence lost his case against the Demons’ identity-stacked board, but won concessions including the release of details of its 70,000 members.
Already a subscriber?Melbourne Football Club president Kate Roffey has vowed to protect the privacy of her 70,000 members, despite agreeing to hand over their contact details to businessman Peter Lawrence as part of his fight to win a seat on the club’s board.
Members have included former number one ticket holder Rupert Murdoch, the former president “Diamond” Joe Gutnick, politician Derryn Hinch, radio host Neil Mitchell, comedian Rob Sitch and film director Baz Luhrmann. The board also includes former Maddocks chief executive David Rennick, former CEO of Iluka Resources David Robb, director of Vicinity Centres and of Tabcorp, Janette Kendall and the former CEO of Direct Factories Outlets Geoff Porz.
It follows a horrid few years for the club, which is set to miss finals this season after winning the premiership in 2021 and uncertainty over superstar Christian Petracca. The judge agreed while some of the board’s rules were arguably restrictive, the “the directors of the club acted bona fide, without collateral motive” and were not being oppressive.
