The strengths and differences neurodivergent people bring to the fashion world are in the spotlight this Melbourne Fashion Week, so we sat down with three creatives to find out how they think the industry can be more inclusive and neuro-affirming.
"Creativity comes from thinking differently and outside of the box, and making unique connections other people can't see," the author, content creator and neurodivergent advocate tells ABC Entertainment.
"When a brand reaches out to work with me , the context might be making selects of an outfit I'd like to shoot, and I'll just go so overboard and send them a mood board that I've made with the items, along with a full spreadsheet with style codes, links, sizes and the colours." Two years ago, they were hired to help creative teams improve inclusivity for M/FW 2022, and came up with the idea to print out pronoun stickers for everyone to add to their lanyard ID cards upon signing in.
To Akii, the first step in making the fashion industry a more inclusive and neuro-affirming space is acknowledging and celebrating neurodivergent people as individuals with different needs. If neurodivergent people aren't invited to the table and asked for their input, "no-one's going to be thinking about what our needs are," Akii agrees, addingAnd when it comes to working in fashion on the day-to-day, Sean says having accessibility "built in from the get-go" is the ideal, regardless of whether someone has been identified as requiring it or not.
