Many Melbourne kindergartens and childcare centers are replacing traditional Mother's and Father's Day celebrations with 'Family Day' to be more inclusive. Parents have expressed disappointment and frustration over the decision, claiming they were not consulted.

Dozens of kindergartens and childcare centres across Melbourne are scrapping Mother's and Father's Day celebrations in an effort to be more inclusive, but parents have complained they were 'blindsided' by the news. Early Child Management Services (EMCS) has announced it will cease recognising the days at more than half of its 69 kindergartens and childcare centres, replacing them with “ Family Day ” celebrations.

Parents at St Helena Preschool in Eltham North were told the news by EMCS management in an email just three hours after the end of term. “Next year we’ll be holding Family Day to honour all caregivers or significant figures in your children’s lives. Children will be encouraged to express gratitude and recognise those who play a supportive role in their lives,” the email stated. “We won’t be holding titled celebrations like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day but we will have a fabulous Family Day celebration.” Parents at the preschool told Seven News they were not consulted and were “blindsided” by the news, but ECMS chief executive Kieran Kearney was unapologetic about the change. “This is recognising that family means different this to different people and different communities,” the chief executive said.Parents quickly took to social media to voice their displeasure about the move, with one describing it as “ridiculous”. “It's not inclusive if it doesn't include people who want to celebrate mothers or fathers days,' the parent wrote.Official advice from Early Childcare Australia encourages education organisations to be more inclusive in how they celebrate Mother's and Father's Day
