Abdelfeteh Nourine allegedly shot British ex-paratrooper Daniel Burke while they were both fighting Russian forces in Ukraine.
An Australian man accused of killing a British ex-paratrooper while the pair were fighting against Russian forces in Ukraine sought consular assistance from Australian authorities before going into hiding.
Nourine and Burke, who had both volunteered to help repel the Russian invasion, travelled to a firing range together in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region last August, about 50 kilometres behind the front lines. “Consular officials have provided assistance to an Australian man in Ukraine,” said a spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade when asked about Nourine. “Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment.”An inquest into Burke’s death was opened this week in the UK. Zak Golombeck, the area coroner for Manchester, was told a man had confessed to being involved in the shooting but had claimed it was an accident.
