A man has been accused of demanding $5 million from a Queensland emergency service, allegedly threatening to light a bushfire if the money was not transferred within three days.

The man, who was arrested by Victoria Police on Monday, allegedly tried to extort millions of dollars from a Queensland emergency service in 2022.

The emergency service reported it had received an online message in October last year, demanding $5 million be transferred by cryptocurrency within three days or else a bushfire would be lit. Picture: Victoria Police.After an extensive investigation by detectives from the Cybercrime Squad, a search warrant was executed at an address in Bundoora, a suburb in Melbourne's north-east, last week.

He is facing a string of charges including extortion with threat to endanger life, threat to destroy/damage property, possess drug of dependence and fail to provide information under warrant.
