A Melbourne man has been fined $20,000 and been banned from fishing for five years for illegal fishing in Victoria’s northeast. The man in his 60s was caught with 22 endangered golden perch fish in his boat in 2023 while fishing on Lake Hume. The bag limit for fishing golden perch is five fish per person. Victorian Fisheries Authority Acting director of education and enforcement Paul Shea said the man and his fishing partner initially told authorities they only had 10 golden perch each.
“Officers seized their 5.1 metre boat on the spot, along with their fishing gear and fish.” Authorities searched both men’s Melbourne homes and discovered 200 abalone meats in one of the premises. There are also strict rules for fishing abalone in Victoria, including a statewide possession limit of 10 anywhere, including a person’s home. Both men pleaded guilty to illegal fishing offences during court hearings in early September.
