Melbourne's leading private schools have committed to preserving football, cricket, athletics, and rowing in their sports programs, despite a major review aimed at adapting to the increasing participation of girls and students in general. The Associated Public Schools of Victoria (APS) assured continuity for all current sports and established a new subcommittee to better accommodate girls' sports.

Melbourne ’s top private schools pledged to keep football, cricket, athletics and rowing at the heart of their sport programs while denying they faced backlash from parents against any potential changes.

“The girls’ sport competition across the APS and AGSV has been running for 25 years and the work of the subcommittee will affirm and enhance the quality of the program,” Melbourne Grammar School principal Philip Grutzner said, but he did not go into detail about those plans. “This will occur again, with any new sports to be introduced based on their feedback,” Grutzner said in a statement toThe principal also denied there had been any backlash from parents as a result of the review into the 116-year-old sporting program.“As far as I am aware, there has been no significant backlash from parents about the review or its findings,” Grutzner said.

“APS will continue to make its best efforts to organise interschool competitions for a large of number of teams across a diverse range of sport in summer, winter and spring competitions,” he said. The principal added each individual school would still determine the number of compulsory sports a student has to be involved in, and the hours they must commit to.
