The Melbourne Renegades have staved off a Brisbane Heat fightback to win their first WBBL title in a rain-affected clash at the MCG. The hosts stumbled to 9-141 after being sent into bat but their defence of the below-par target started off strong, reducing Brisbane to 5-12 after three overs as rain began to fall. The covers eventually came on and half an hour lost was enough to see the target reduced to 98 in a 12-over game.
Three wickets in the four overs after the restart put the Renegades in pole position but then Heat skipper Jess Jonassen fired to keep her side in with a shot at victory. Enter Sophie Molineux for the last over. The international veteran and Melbourne captain held Jonassen to a single with her first ball, and four more completed Melbourne’s extraordinary turnaround from last in 2023 to champions this year. “It’s amazing,” Nicole Faltum said.
