Melbourne prepares to celebrate New Year's Eve with a dazzling fireworks display, attracting thousands of revelers to various official zones across the city.
While some eras swiftly come to an end, others endure. Once again, thousands of Melburnians will gather in the city for the fireworks display. Lord Mayor Nick Reece said Melbourne would be one of the first cities in the world to hit midnight, and that has compiled a guide to help you pick where to be when the fireworks kick off in Melbourne on Tuesday night, and how to get there. Early evening fireworks will begin at 9.
30pm at the four official celebration zones across the city: Docklands, the Shrine, Treasury Gardens and Flagstaff Gardens. The zones will be alcohol-free and will feature DJs, live entertainment and food trucks between 6pm and 1am. The rooftop fireworks and laser display will light up more than six square kilometres of the city across 27 skyscrapers. Those watching from home can tune into the official broadcast on Channel Nine, owner of this masthead, from 11pm. In Victoria’s regions, New Year’s Eve revellers can catch 9.30pm and midnight fireworks displays on the waterfront at Geelong, on the Breakwater at Warrnambool, at Nowingi Place at Mildura and at Lakes Entrance in East Gippsland. There will also be fireworks at 9.15pm and midnight at Rosalind Park at Bendigo, 9pm and midnight at Wangaratta Showgrounds, and at 9.30pm on Lake Wendouree at Ballarat.Public transport will be free on Tuesday from 6pm, and revellers are encouraged to use the services because cars will be impeded by road closures and an expected crowd of 500,000. Police have warned drivers not to drink and drive, and say all the force’s booze buses will be deployed over the holiday. Train, bus and tram services will run to a normal Tuesday timetable, along with additional services between 6pm and midnight. Visitors should check the Public Transport Victoria website for changes to tram routes because of closed roads. Melbourne’s bars, restaurants and hotels will also host parties and dinners, including Farmer’s Daughter, Ludlow and Taxi Kitche
