The Delta variant of COVID-19 circulating in Melbourne has been genomically linked to a returned traveller in hotel quarantine. 9News
"While we have a genomic link, we do not currently have an epidemiological link, further investigations are underway to see if we are able to establish any contact between the returned traveller and these families.
Acting Police Minister Danny Pearson said while investigations were ongoing, he could confirm there had been 24 people, including crew, on the traveller's plane. All other passengers and SkyBus crew tested negative to COVID-19. Victoria's Deputy Chief Health Officer Professor Allen Cheng said there were several possibilities being investigated to establish how the Delta strain of COVID-19 entered the community.
"The investigation is continuing but there are four main theories and some of them are more or less likely."The first theory is the case transmitted to - or was infected by - someone such as another passenger on the plane, and that person has gone on to infect someone in the community. The third theory is the case transmitted the infection to a staff member somewhere along their journey from the airport to the first hotel, the second hotel and then out to the community.
The fact the returned traveller did not infect anyone on his flight from Sri Lanka to Melbourne was not particularly surprising, Professor Cheng said."It might be a little bit different with the Delta variant, but most people don't come into contact with other people and infect them.Quarantine facility will 'reduce risk'
