Richard Barren, principal of Langwarrin Park Primary School, was arrested upon his return to Australia from the US. Australian Border Force officers allegedly discovered child abuse material on his phone during a baggage examination. Police later raided his home and seized electronic devices.

Richard Barren, the principal of Langwarrin Park Primary School in Melbourne 's south-east, has been charged with possession of child abuse material. Barren was arrested on January 26th after returning to Australia from the United States. During a routine baggage examination at the airport, Australian Border Force officers allegedly discovered child abuse material on Barren's phone.

Following the discovery, Australian Federal Police raided Barren's home on the Mornington Peninsula, where investigators seized multiple electronic devices. In a letter sent to parents on Friday, the Department of Education confirmed the charges against Barren, stating that he had been charged with a 'criminal offence related to possession of child abuse material'. The department emphasized that, at present, there is no information to suggest that any student at the school has been impacted by the alleged criminal activity. Assistant principal Debra Haddow has been appointed to act as principal at Langwarrin Park Primary School in Barren's absence. The matter was brought before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court today, with Barren scheduled to return to court in May. The Department of Education expressed concern over the seriousness of the charges in a statement to the ABC. In a November principal's report, Barren informed the school community that he would be taking long service leave. He stated his last day of the school year would be December 6th, and he would be traveling to the USA with his family for seven weeks. During this time, he planned to attend various sporting events, including NBA, NFL, and Ice Hockey games, and visit numerous theme parks.
