A Melbourne toy store, Moonee Ponds Toyland, is facing criticism for allegedly selling vapes despite ongoing crackdowns on e-cigarettes. Locals express concern over the proximity of vape sales to children's toys.
A Melbourne toy store has come under fire for allegedly selling vapes amid continued e-cigarettes crackdowns. The Moonee Ponds Toyland was reported to authorities more than a year ago. However, sale signs for tobacco and e-cigarettes continue to be displayed alongside children’s toys. 7 NEWS spoke to a worker at the store who said it was closing. However, the combination still has some locals concerned.
“Bring your kids in to have a look at the toys and get a vape on your way out,” one local said. Another said: “It’s definitely not for kids, and it’s definitely inappropriate.” The shop was allegedly reported to council in early 2023, but it was found to be compliant with the tobacco act. A tobacco sign outside the business was taken down, but sales from the shop continued. The shopfront now has a public notice for a liquor license application, with locals telling 7NEWS the store has plans to open a bottle shop. “It was a toy shop, then it was a toy shop that had vapes, now it’s going to be a toy shop with no vapes, and then it’s going to be a bottle shop,” one confused local said. Moonee Valley City Council says reports about the unlawful sale of e-cigarettes are referred to Victoria Police, however police say the Federal Health Department is the head agency and do not comment on investigations. In September, reforms allowed people able to buy vapes from chemists without a prescription, but users would need to speak to a pharmacist before purchase. The vapes will also come in plain packaging and flavours will be limited to mint, menthol or tobacco. Vape buyers would also need photo ID for age verification
