Sam “The Punisher” Abdulrahim, a prominent figure in Melbourne’s underworld, was laid to rest in a golden casket amidst an outpouring of emotion from family, friends, and associates. The funeral ceremony, held at the Alawi Islamic Association of Victoria Centre, was attended by over 200 mourners who paid their respects to the slain gangster.
A Melbourne underworld figure, Sam “ The Punisher ” Abdulrahim, was laid to rest in a golden casket at a community centre in the city's north. Abdulrahim's parents and siblings were surrounded by about 200 mourners at the ceremony at the Alawi Islamic Association of Victoria Centre in Epping on Thursday morning. Abdulrahim's father, Farouk Abdulrahim, was visibly distraught as he was comforted by several men outside the community centre before the coffin was carried out.
A procession, led by three motorbikes and four men carrying a floral arrangement with the word “Suna” - Abdulrahim's nickname - slowly escorted the hearse to High Street. Under Islamic custom, close relatives spent some time with Abdulrahim's body early on Thursday before it was moved to a public space inside the centre for mourners to pray. Muay Thai kickboxing trainer and gym owner Mark Castagnini and popular wedding drummer Edmond Dantes were among the mourners who paid their respects. Around 10:30 am, a hearse carrying a golden casket arrived. Six men carried it inside the community centre during the ceremony. Soon after, a woman emerged holding a large photo of Abdulrahim for the cameras as they awaited the casket's departure. At Glenroy's Northern Memorial Park, mourners chanted as pallbearers carried the casket, covered in a green shroud, to the grave. Police believe Abdulrahim's killers fled in a white Porsche Macan SUV, which was later found ablaze less than two kilometers away in the neighboring suburb of Reservoir. On Thursday, Detective Inspector Dean Thomas, the head of the homicide squad, appealed to Abdulrahim's family, friends, and associates to cooperate with the investigation and provide any information they may have to identify those responsible. He acknowledged the ongoing funeral proceedings but emphasized the need for assistance in bringing the perpetrators to justice. When questioned about the possibility of the suspects fleeing overseas after abandoning the getaway car near Melbourne Airport, Thomas stated that detectives were keeping an open mind to all possibilities. Abdulrahim had survived multiple assassination attempts, including eight gunshot wounds in 2022 and a hail of 17 bullets in 2024. He had recently gone into hiding to escape the escalating violence. His downward spiral began in 2016 when he sided with the wrong faction during a violent conflict between rival criminal groups. Abdulrahim's association with the Mongols Motorcycle Club provided him with some protection initially, but his actions drew unwanted attention, ultimately leading to the severing of ties.
