Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and NSW are experiencing the worst forecast heatwave of the year, throwing festivals and major events into chaos.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued heatwave warnings for the three states from Saturday to Monday and warns “we haven’t seen a heatwave like this yet this year”.“This heat is still 10 to 15 degrees above the March average,” said senior meteorologist Lincoln Trainor. “That’s putting stress on the body that’s dangerous.”

Adelaide experienced its hottest March morning since 2019 on Sunday and was expected to reach 40 degrees on Sunday, as the state joined Victoria, Tasmania and Canberra in a long weekend withMelbourne’s temperature fell just short of 38 degrees on Saturday, although the overnight minimums reached all-time highs in parts of Melbourne and was forecast to reach 39 degrees on Sunday and 38 on Monday, before a cool change is set to arrive on Tuesday.

The organisers of Pitch Music and Arts festival in Moyston — 15km west of Ararat - forged ahead amid extreme heat and fire warnings, despite fury from festival-goers, parents and politicians.Thousands of festival goers – many without phone reception – were left confused and concerned on Friday night when they were advised to leave just hours after arriving due to “extreme fire danger”.
