Struggling Australians who have endured coronavirus lockdown for more than seven days in a row will be eligible for new support payments of up to $500 per week.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the temporary COVID disaster payment will be made on a weekly basis, in response to the extended lockdown affecting metropolitan Melbourne.
They must also declare they have less than $10,000 in liquid assets and must not be receiving any other income support payment or pandemic payment. It comes as Melburnians prepare for a second week in hard lockdown - after acting Premier James Merlino announced stay-at-home orders would remain in metropolitan Melbourne for a further seven days.

Vaccine rollout ‘urgent’ to protect Australians from COVID variants | Sky News AustraliaMedical Journal of Australia's Editor-in-Chief Professor Nick Talley says the Federal Government must rollout the vaccine with urgency to combat the new COVID-19 variants. \n\nThe Coalition government has come under heavy fire for the slow pace of the vaccination program in the wake of Victoria’s latest outbreak which has thus far recorded a total of 54 cases. \n\nWhile short, sharp measures have worked in the past, Professor Talley has warned current provisions in place could be insufficient in dealing with emerging strains of the virus.\n\n“The problem is these new variant viruses are much more transmissible – double or triple the transmissibility of the original virus, and that was bad enough,” Professor Talley told Sky News.\n\n“A very, very transmissible virus is very hard to control if it takes hold in the community - lockdowns even and masks may not be sufficient to control an outbreak. \n\n“These new variants, unfortunately, are like a new game – there’s a much higher risk … if the virus takes hold in Victoria, it could leak out to the rest of the country even with the measures currently in place.\n\n“Frankly, the only way out of the risk is to have a highly vaccinated population and that is why I suggested this is urgent.'\n
