Victoria records a record number of coronavirus cases with 288 new COVID-19 cases diagnosed since yesterday, the largest daily increase of the pandemic so far.

Victoria has recorded a record number of coronavirus cases with 288 new COVID-19 cases diagnosed since yesterday, the largest daily increase of the pandemic so far.Premier Daniel Andrews said 37,588 tests were conducted yesterday.

"That is the biggest single day of testing that has been done and by some considerable margin," he said. He said Victorians, especially those living in metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire, which are subject to a six-week lockdown, should wear face masks when they leave the house."We are simply asking that if you can, wear a mask where you can't distance.""There will be great concern about those numbers, people will feel particularly concerned to see that number as high as it is," he said.

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said today's numbers were "ugly" but they were an indication of what was happening in the state one week ago. He said he expected numbers to plateau over the coming week if people adhered to the stay-at-home rules.More to come.
