UPDATE | Preston Hemphill’s lawyer confirmed his client was involved in the initial confrontation with Tyre Nichols, and Hemphill’s body-cam footage was “Video 1” in the series of horrifying clips released Friday evening.
It’s unclear exactly what role Hemphill, who is white, played in the ordeal, but many had called for his firing after horrific body-cam and surveillance footage captured an unidentified white officer pushing Nichols to the ground and tasing him.
Hemphill’s lawyer, Lee Gerald, confirmed in a statement to The Daily Beast that his client was involved in the initial encounter with Nichols before he fled. That clip, nearly six minutes long, appears to show Hemphill pin down Nichols while shouting commands at him.Parts of the video are obscured because Hemphill was too close to Nichols to record what was happening, but expletives were bleeped dozens of times in the clip.
