Two men who died in an Alameda County car crash may have gunned down a woman the day before, police said.
identified the victim as Ashley Waters, who was reportedly picking up her boyfriend at the time of the shooting.
Monday at 1:45 a.m., deputies from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office came across a 2007 gray Toyota Camry that had been reported stolen in a carjacking in Oakland on Sunday. Sheriff’s deputies pursued the Camry on northbound Interstate 880 near Hayward. “Deputies attempted to make a high-risk traffic stop on the vehicle, but the driver ignored the activated lights and sirens of the marked patrol vehicles,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The Camry exited I-880 and headed into San Leandro at a “high rate of speed,” deputies said. Police in San Leandro laid down tire spikes to slow the car down at Preda and Davis streets, but when the driver swerved to avoid them, the car slammed head-on into a tree, police said. The Camry caught fire after the collision. Two male occupants died in the car; first responders rescued a third occupant, a 14-year-old girl in the back seat, when her foot got trapped in the vehicle.
“During the investigation, it was learned the vehicle was also involved in a homicide in the city of Manteca on the evening of June 11,” the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. Law enforcement said they did not know the identities of the two deceased suspects. “This is just one of those things where you just can’t make it up,” Alameda County public information officer Tyronea Modeste told KCRA, “all the things that happened in a 24-hour period.”
