Mental health authorities and advocates say care is most appropriately provided in the community, to avoid the need for emergency hospital care, but some say accessing care early on is challenging.
The first time Jasper* was admitted to hospital against her will, she was held there for more than two months.
"Time away from your family, time away from work — those important things that give meaning and purpose to your life, you don't have all of a sudden because you're detained," she said. "If you were born in Asia, you're about 40 per cent more likely to receive involuntary treatment. About 30 per cent in Africa or the Middle East, and about 20 per cent in New Zealand and the Pacific," Dr Corderoy said.Dr Corderoy said Australia had one of the highest rates of involuntary treatment in the world and said the practice can make it harder for patients to engage with the health system in the future.
In a statement NSW Health said mental healthcare was most appropriately provided in the community, to avoid the need for emergency hospital care. "By the time somebody gets to hospital, experiencing these really severe symptoms of mental illness, sometimes there is nothing that can be done besides involuntary treatment," she said.
"They're subjected to it rather than asked whether that' s something they would like or would need," BEING CEO Priscilla Brice said.According to the AIHW, mental health represents 15 per cent of total burden of disease in NSW but Ms Brice said mental health only receives 5 per cent of overall healthcare funding.
