Professor Hickie, co-director of the Brain and Mind Centre said the data confirmed what mental health experts had been warning for months.
"The mechanism is in place. NSW could purchase those beds tomorrow if the funding was there to do it," Professor Hickie said. A NSW Health spokesperson said purchasing additional mental health services was unnecessary at this stage given the number of acute mental health admissions was slightly lower than the same time last year.
