Her own struggle to find her dream wedding gown led Alyssia Daley to start a custom-designed wedding dress shop to spare other brides the same angst. She's one of only two Black Bridal designers in the state of Ohio and one of a handful in the nation.

MENTOR, Ohio – Alyssia Daley, like most brides, spent months in search of that “perfect dress.”

“I just gave up. I couldn’t find a dress that made me feel beautiful and confident. And, I decided that I was just not going to continually mortify myself by squeezing my plus-sized body into these tiny wedding dresses which showed every bump,” she said. “So, I settled, and just tried to focus on enjoying the other details of my wedding,” she said, with a sigh.

One year later, Daley approached him again, this time with a full business plan -- which focused on plus-sized, custom-designed dresses -- and several sketches she had quietly produced.“A month later the world shut down. We had just sunk everything we had into the shop, and suddenly no one is getting married,” Daley explained. “We very quickly learned the art of pivoting.”

Alyssia Daley says she meets an average of 10 times with a bride to assure the bride's vision is met in her finished gown. “I just tell them ‘you tell me the dream, and I will tell you how we can get you as close to the dream as possible, without compromising too much.’”Daley meets with a bride as many as 10 times during the process of creating her dream dress.

In general, a bride’s personal style can still be based on her race and her background, according to Daley.
