Certain political factions, such as the far-right Identity and Democracy group of MEPs, lack any representation from racialised minorities. In recent years campaigners have watched as far-right parties exploit diversity rhetoric and put forward minority ethnic candidates in an attempt to further their own agenda. “When racialised individuals espouse far-right ideologies, they legitimise and justify policies that perpetrate harm against minorities,” said Mahmoudi. “This is what we call diversity-washing.”
