Not everyone will love what the designer calls “the more voluptuous body” of the SL63, but there’s no faulting its powerful performance or sophisticated tech.

The bodywork looks far more adventurous and imposing out in the traffic than isolated in photos. The new soft top gives near-coupe isolation when up, and can be raised or lowered at up to 60km/h in just 15 seconds. Cleverly, the central information screen can be adjusted to minimise reflections when the roof is down. And not only is the newcomer sportier, it’s the first four-seater SL sold in Australia, so it makes a pitch for the head as well as the heart.
