Photo: Drew Angerer/Getty Images Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a surprise briefing at Justice Department’s headquarters that the department has filed a motion in court to unseal and release the warrant he personally authorized that was used by federal agents to search Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
It’s highly unusual for federal authorities to discuss on-going criminal investigations, let alone one involving a former president of the United States, and it’s rarer still for the feds to release a copy of a search warrant before the investigation is over. But the department has faced attacks from Trump’s allies and wide-ranging questions about why it was necessary to execute a search warrant on Trump’s Florida residence.
Trump and others have called on the department to release the warrant, despite the fact that his own lawyer said authorities gave them a copy, as required by law, which could be released without a court order.
