Facebook's self-appointed"Supreme Court" will review one of its first cases involving the use of false images in politics.

The Meta Oversight Board announced on Tuesday that it had selected a case to review involving a moment caught on video from the 2022 midterm elections that was turned into a"deepfake," or an image meant to mislead the public. The original image had President Joe Biden placing an"I voted" sticker on his granddaughter's chest and kissing her on the cheek.

"Free speech is vitally important, it's the cornerstone of democratic governance, but there are complex questions concerning what Meta's human rights responsibilities should be regarding video content that has been altered to create a misleading impression of a public figure," Hughes added."It's important that we look at what challenges and best practices Meta should adopt when it comes to authenticating video content at scale.

The company's board has overseen a number of timely matters and Meta's handling of them. For example, it was asked to review the social media company's COVID-19 moderation policies in April to ensure they were still up to date.
