Meta announces about 63,000 Instagram accounts in Nigeria have been taken down after attempting to engage in financial sextortion schemes mostly targeting at men.
Experts say sextortion is likely to get worse and we need to normalise speaking about the scams to let victims know "it is going to be OK".
Yahoo Boys are notorious for scams that range from passing themselves off as people in financial need or Nigerian princes offering an outstanding return on an investment. "The conversation must turn to should you find yourself in this situation, it is going to be OK," coroner Audrey Jamieson said in her report.A note was found in his pocket that read: "I made a huge mistake, I'm sorry."
In Victoria alone, a total of 11 other young people over the past decade have also taken their lives after being victims of sextortion or image-based abuse.Meta said the 63,000 Instagram accounts it disrupted primarily targeted adult men in the US, but there were also attempts to target minors.Rohan Cosgriff didn't tell anyone about a sextortion scam he had fallen victim to before taking his own life.
Meta representatives said this was not the first time they had disrupted such networks, but added they were disclosing the current operation to "drive awareness".Mateo Veneracion never thought he would fall victim to a sextortion scam, but he is among a growing number of young men being targeted on social media.
