The authors used a water-soluble metal-oxide cage, known as a polyoxometalate , to facilitate the isolation of americium from chemically similar elements found in nuclear waste. Such a POM-mediated separation could solve a long-standing problem in reprocessing spent fuel from civilian nuclear reactors, thereby enhancing the efficiency and safety of the nuclear industry.
