Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, who began the job in September, believes there are hundreds of corrupt officers serving in the force who should not be there
Sir Mark said it was right that a criminal conviction shouldn't automatically block recruitment, especially for trivial or teenage offences, but the exclusion bar should be raised nationally.
Investigators found 196 individuals, allowed to keep their jobs, should be urgently re-assessed or subject to new vetting.Another 689 less serious cases will also be re-examined, which could include new interviews with victims and witnesses who may have felt let down by the original investigations.Baroness Casey's report released last month listed a series of scandals that had"damaged the Met's reputation and cast doubt upon its culture and standards".
• The jailing in December 2021 of two Met officers for taking and sharing photos of two murdered women, Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman • The jailing in February of police officer David Carrick, who admitted 49 charges - including 24 counts of rape – against 12 women. Thirty officers are being considered for the re-vetting process, but Sir Mark expects more than 100 will eventually be put through the system.
