The New York Mets need some pitching.
The Athletic’s Keith Law, a baseball/prospects writer, has an idea for general manager Billy Eppler.
“I don’t think the next deGrom is in their system, so maybe they go trade for Mitch Keller in the offseason,”. “A lot of people in the game seem to think the Pirates will trade him , so you go get him and if you like him you sign him long term.” Keller, 27, has a 4.22 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 173 strikeouts in 155 2/3 innings, which is good for an ERA+ of 107. His projected ERA stats are lower .
Keller was a second-round pick of the Pirates in 2014. Now in his fifth MLB season, Keller truly arrived as a stable rotation anchor in 2022, when he posted a 3.91 ERA. He has two more years left in arbitration before he reaches free agency, and as the Pirates’ No. 1 starter, he will command a sizable return. The Mets have built up their prospect depth not just to use all of those players on their major league team, but to also strike on trades.
While the right-handed Keller may never become one of the best pitchers in the game, there is value in consistency with the chance for more —, so it’s clear they’ll have to be creative in filling rotation holes with Kodai Senga and José Quintana the only locks and little upper-level pitching on the way in the minors.
