New York Mets' DJ Stewart has breakout performance in win against Pittsburgh Pirates
Stewart emerged from a deep slump at the plate this week, hitting two home runs in Wednesday’s 8-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. He also had his first, pinch-hit homer in Tuesday’s loss to the Pirates., Stewart shared how his young daughter has inspired him to keep going despite the ups and downs of his professional baseball career.
“I love this game and like I said, I have had injury issues and I know what I am capable of doing whenever I’m healthy, so that’s what kept me going was getting back to the big leagues. This game is unbelievable and I don’t take it for granted, playing at the big league level. ... I have a little girl, and diapers aren’t cheap, so that is what keeps me going,” he said, laughing.
Stewart, 29, was called up to the Mets on July 4 after signed a minor-league contract in February. A 2015 first-round pick with the Baltimore Orioles, Stewart has spent the majority of his career on the injured list or in the minor leagues.
