The Belgian movie 'Jeanne Dielman' was recently voted the best film ever by the British Film Institute's once-a-decade Sight and Sound poll.
Delphine Seyrig as the title character in a scene from Chantal Ackerman's"Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles."This weekend, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston will screen a movie that, just a couple of months ago, caused a furor online.
For those who aren’t aware of the film, it’s about a Belgian woman who goes through her daily routine of cooking, cleaning, running errands, and making money as a prostitute. As the movie progresses, our protagonist begins to make errors in her daily routine. Eventually, she breaks down in the most tragic and life-altering of ways.
“I was glad and proud that it was number one,” says MFAH film curator Marian Luntz. “It is a viewing experience. It’s very particular because of its length, I would say, and its style.” Of course, this set off a lot of vitriol on social media, as both critics and Film Twitter denizens voiced their displeasure over “Dielman”’s ascendancy. Even filmmaker Paul Schrader, who says he’s a “Dielman” fan,” went on Facebook and griped that the poll “reflects not a historical continuum but a politically correct rejiggering… 'Dielman' will from this time forward be remembered not only as an important film in cinema history but also as a landmark of distorted woke reappraisal.
