The Light Blues were linked with a number of defenders but Beale revealed they were priced out of one main target.
Michael Beale admits Rangers were "priced out" of a move for his priority of bringing in a left-sided central defender.
The unnamed defender moved to the Premier League instead, according to Beale, with the Light Blues linked with Arsenal man Auston Trusty who eventually upped sticks for Sheffield United. The likes of Jonathan Panzo, Ronnie Edwards and Jake Cooper were also touted in some quarters, but the Ibrox gaffer says the fee ended up being too rich for Rangers' blood despite being 'some way down the road' for a deal.
He said: "We went a long way down the road, without giving any insight on names, with a left centre-back earlier in the window. To provide competition for Ben and the fact we wanted to play with a back three this season, ideally we wanted that option. We were priced out, he moved to a Premier League club for more than what we were willing to pay.
