Exclusive: Michael Cera reveals more about his Barbie character Allan, specifically his relationship with Ken full of “distant yearning”:
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie appears to be both a love letter to and a subversion of Mattel’s iconic toy line, full of humor poking fun at yet still embracing its titular dolls' legacy and cultural impact. Barbie's early reactions are positive, hinting at a critical success to match what will likely be a large box office draw. The film’s all-star cast includes Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, and Will Ferrell.
Although Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s Ken visit the real world in the film, time is also spent in Barbie Land, the colorful paradise home to hordes of Barbies and Kens… and Allan, played by Michael Cera. Allan is something of a mystery, though the Arrested Development and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World star has teased key aspects of his personality in a recent interview with Screen Rant.

I love that he just wants the best for Ken, even if that means Ken not being near him. He wants Ken's happiness. I thought that was sort of a life of servitude in a way. Distant yearning. [Chuckles]
How The Barbie Movie Can Turn Ken Lore On Its Head Allan’s inclusion in the Barbie movie is a fun Easter egg that also has the chance to shake up Ken’s story. The character represents the real-life Allan doll, which was introduced in 1964 with box art that read “He’s Ken’s buddy” and “All of Ken’s clothes fit him!”.
How much of the relationship between Ken and Allan will be explored in Barbie, or even a potential Barbie 2, remains to be seen, but it’s certainly an opportunity to see Ken as something more than Barbie’s number one admirer. At the least, Michael Cera seems to be suggesting that someone out there looks at Ken the way Ken looks at Barbie. The full extent of Michael Cera’s participation in the film, and Allan’s relationship with Ken, will only be revealed when Barbie hits theaters.
